Impact/Purpose:

To present a 5 minute, fun, fast-paced, and informal lightning talk on the use of story maps to concisely and interactively communicate a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) at the HIA Practitioner Workshop in MN April 1-2, 2019.

Description:

How many times have you conducted an HIA or looked up an HIA conducted by others and the report is a whopping 150+ pages? You search for a summary report or a brief, because nobody got time for that! Using a combination of maps, images, narrative, and multimedia content, Story Maps offer a unique tool for effectively communicating your HIA. Maps provide a window into information of all kinds and a place-based narrative for your story. Maps can highlight health disparities that exist, be used to help prioritize decisions and inform project sitings, and much more. And when placed in an interactive, online format where readers can engage with the story, maps become a powerful compelling tool that can inform, motivate, and inspire its readers – community members, stakeholders, and decision-makers alike. But what about those individuals who don’t have access to a computer, you may ask. The Story Map is one step ahead of you! In addition to offering an online interactive format, several Story Map templates also provide a print to pdf function, allowing you to share a static copy of your Story Map in hard copy or electronic file format. Harness the power of the Story Map today!
