EPAUS9rT database for use with the TIMES modeling platform

Citation:

Lenox, C. EPAUS9rT database for use with the TIMES modeling platform. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, 2019.

Impact/Purpose:

Policies related to air quality are leading to changes in U.S. energy system. These policies interact with economic, technological, and social factors already at play in energy system choices. The goal of this product is to update an in-house tool that is used to analyze the system-wide environmental impacts of the ongoing transformation to the U.S. energy system including policy, technological, and behavioral drivers.

Description:

This product addresses the goal of enhancing our understanding of the environmental impacts of major transformations in the deployment and use of new energy technologies. A key science question is whether these transformations will impact air quality. In addressing questions about the environmental effects of major transitions in the energy system, individual sectors within the system should not be considered in isolation. A systems-level approach is needed. The EPAUS9rT is a large database representation of the U.S. energy system for use with the TIMES model. The EPAUS9rT parameterizes the costs, efficiencies, and availability of both current and future technologies available to meet U.S. energy demands at the nine region census division level. The energy system is linked across sectors and allows from modeling analyses that look at the impacts of certain advances in energy production and use across all sectors of the energy system. This particular product is an updated and calibrated version of the EPAUS9rT database made available on the "EPAUS9rT Database Users Group" Sharepoint site. Updated database will be used by TIMES modeling team as well as partners outside of the agency to explore energy transformation in the U.S. and its effect on air quality. In the past 10 years, the database has been used in over 50 published research analyses of the U.S. energy system.
