Exploring Green Infrastructure Air Quality Impacts as Part of Sustainable Urban Design
Citation:
Baldauf, R. Exploring Green Infrastructure Air Quality Impacts as Part of Sustainable Urban Design. 2019 US/EU Webinar Series on Passive Mitigation, RTP, NC, May 30, 2019.
Impact/Purpose:
Near-road exposures to traffic emitted pollutants have been shown to elevate health reisks for nearby populations. This presentation reviews EPA research on passive methods to mitigate near-road pollution, with a focus on roadside vegetation. The presentation also summarizes tools developed by EPA to assist urban planners and developers to use roadside vegetation as a means to mitigate near-road air pollution. Thus, the impact of this work will be an improved understanding of the role urban green infrastructure can play in improving local air quality for a worldwide audience of environmental and health practitioners
Description:
Review presentation on how roadside vegetation affects local air quality, including the concern of near-road exposures, results from EPA research, and tools developed by EPA to help urban planners and developers interested in implementing roadside vegetation as a method to mitigate near-road pollutant exposures
