Overview of research and the contribution of the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)/Office of Research and Development (ORD) to the 2017 Lake Huron Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI). Lake Huron Partnership, Port Huron, MI, May 21 - 22, 2019.

Impact/Purpose:

EPA ORD’s involvement in NCCA and CSMI produces monitoring and assessment data needed by state managers and GLNPO for GLWQA and CWA reporting. With EPA ORD’s help, each program builds state capacity through participatory priority-setting, sampling design construction, field work, data analysis, and information reporting.

Description:

EPA ORD participates in multiple monitoring and assessment programs on the Great Lakes to address science and management priorities of the Office of Water, the Great Lakes National Program Office, Lake Partnerships, and State agencies. Programs’ objectives are driven by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the Clean Water Act. This presentation is to brief the Lake Huron Lake Partnership on results from the 2015 National Coastal Condition Assessment (NCCA) and the 2017 Lake Huron Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI). Together these programs can provide lake managers with broad assessment and specific process data. Emphasis in the presentation will be on the sampling conducted and analyses completed by ORD staff for Lake Huron CSMI. ORD was responsible for water quality analyses for all CSMI cruises conducted by EPA, USGS, and NOAA. Sampling was done using at sites along shore-normal transects in major basins of the lake. In addition, ORD deployed an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and conducted benthic assessments using video and dredge sampling. The presentation will highlight NCCA and CSMI results for Lake Huron and engage with partners on further analyses and reporting.
