Requirements for Class A, AA, B Sludge Treatment Processes and the Associated Reporting Requirements

Citation:

Boczek, L. Requirements for Class A, AA, B Sludge Treatment Processes and the Associated Reporting Requirements. WEF residuals and biosolids, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, May 07 - 10, 2019.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation will give the audience information concerning the pathogen reduction requirements for Class A and B biosolids. It will also go into detail about the treatment options that are listed in the biosolid regulations for Class A and B treatment. This presentation also goes into detail about the Vector attraction reduction requirements that are permitted under the 503 regulations.

Description:

The Clean Water Act requires that EPA regulate the residuals that are left after wastewater treatment. These residuals can be treated and land applied, or they can be incinerated or surface disposed. The regulations that govern these parameters are known as the 503 regulations. Biosolids designated for land application can be classified as Class A or B depending on the level of treatment that received. Class A biosolids can be sold to the public or land applied without further restrictions because of the level of treatment they received. Class B biosolids are not treated to the same level and as such may be land applied with site restrictions on place. Biosolids are also further regulated by their inability to attract such as flies, mice etc. which are collectively called vectors. Biosolids need to be processed or land applied in a manner that reduces the attractiveness to vectors.
