Impact/Purpose:
The 2019 U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Environmental Monitoring and Data Quality Workshop is an important opportunity for the Air and Energy Management Division (AEMD) of the National Risk Management Research Laboratory in the Office of Research and Development to highlight the aligned research initiatives DoD have expressed interest in hearing updates from for this venue. AEMD is also a recipient of DoD Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) dollars, which this venue will also facilitate an opportunity to share information on those collaborative initiatives.
Description:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (i.e., EPA’s or the Agency’s) Air and Energy Management Division (AEMD) in the Office of Research and Development’s (ORD’s), National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) performs advanced methods development, provides solution-oriented mitigation of air pollutants, develops robust decision-making models and tools, and assesses environmental implications for air pollutant sources and energy systems in order to provide the Agency with a basis of knowledge for informed decisions on agency-issued guidance, standards, and regulations. AEMD accomplishes its mission through diverse stakeholder partnerships from industry to government to everyday citizens. The landscape of science is constantly evolving. Today, pollutants are being measured at previously unseen levels of detection. Novel, innovative technology is being unveiled at a rapid pace and evaluated for relevance in measurement and monitoring priority areas. Emerging environmental issues and contaminants of concern are being investigated to answer the immediate questions of uncertainty with regards to public health and exposure. Priority research focused on the most pressing environmental and heath areas are identified through our six national research programs from needs expressed by EPA’s program and regional offices, states, tribes, and other Agency partners. AEMD’s work is primarily centered on the Air and Energy (A-E) National Research Program for advancing the science critical to improving air quality and addressing impacts that are influenced by emerging air pollutants, growing impact from sources, and changes to the nation’s energy portfolio and environmental conditions. All ten of the topics of interest expressed by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for the 2019 Environmental Monitoring & Data Quality Workshop are areas where A-E has focus and AEMD has ongoing efforts. There are thousands of per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) in the environment and AEMD is aggressively researching and developing sampling techniques and mitigation solutions to determine sources of this emerging area of concern. A few AEMD projects are being funded collaboratively by DoD’s Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) dollars, including work for open detonations and burns. Our Kansas City Transportation and Local-scale Air Quality Study (KC-TRAQS) field campaign in Kansas City is complete with a very ‘rich’ data set from six different instrumental measurements with millions of data points that will take extensive data analysis to develop results. This presentation will focus on the environmental challenges AEMD is tackling and solutions we are developing plus more.
