Jetter, Jim. Overview of ISO Standard 19867-1:2018 Laboratory Testing of Cookstoves. Implementation of Standards for Clean Cooking Solutions, Kathmandu, South Asia, NEPAL, December 08 - 14, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

Household air pollution from solid-fuel stoves is the most significant environmental problem that affects human health worldwide. WHO (World Health Organization) estimates that 3-4 million premature deaths annually are caused by household air pollution, mainly from emissions from cookstoves in the developing world. Transboundary transport of pollutants from millions of stoves in Asia affects ambient air quality in the western U.S. The EPA ORD (Office of Research and Development) is conducting research and activities to address the problem in coordination with a much larger international effort led by the Clean Cooking Alliance. Goals of ORD’s program include: 1. Supporting the development of standards for cookstoves through ISO TC (Technical Committee) 285: Clean Cookstoves and Clean Cooking Solutions 2. Supporting the development of international Regional Testing and Knowledge Centers for scientifically evaluating and certifying cookstoves to international standards ORD’s program supports EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment through clean cooking solutions. This presentation provides an overview of the recently published ISO Standard 19867-1, Laboratory Testing of Cookstoves, for an audience of stakeholders who are implementing standards in the Asian region and for cookstove testing laboratories that will perform testing. The presentation will be given by Jim Jetter at the WHO (World Health Organization) stakeholder consultation entitled "Building country capacity for adoption and implementation of standards and voluntary performance targets for clean cookstoves and clean cooking solutions" in Kathmandu, Nepal on December 10-14, 2018 and at an associated CLASP (Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program) workshop entitled "Building a Foundation for National Cookstoves Standards Implementation in Bangladesh - Final Recommendations and New ISO Standards" in Dhaka, Bangladesh on December 8, 2018.

Description:

This presentation provides an overview of ISO Standard 19867-1, Laboratory Testing of Cookstoves. Included in the overview is information on (1) how the ISO standard was developed, (2) how emissions and efficiency testing is conducted, (3) how safety testing is conducted, and (3) how durability testing is conducted.
