NARS Sampling Frames and Target Populations

Citation:

Olsen, A. NARS Sampling Frames and Target Populations. 11th National Monitoring Conference, Denver, Colorado, March 25 - 29, 2019.

Impact/Purpose:

The National Aquatic Resource Surveys depend on knowing the aquatic resource population definition as well as a GIS layer that allows sites to be selected for sampling in the field. The purpose of this presentation given to NARS partners is to document what has been used in the past and pose questions about what should be used for the sample frame in the future.

Description:

The National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS) require a definition of the target population and the availability of a GIS sample frame for completing the site selection process. The purpose of the presentation is to describe what has been used in the past for the National Lake Assessment, the National Rivers and Streams Assessment, the National Coastal Condition Assessment and the National Wetland Condition Assessment. As knowledge from prior surveys was acquired both the target population and the sample frame changed for each of the assessments. Given this background, a proposal is given for future assessments for the target population and sample frame to be used. Questions are posed for the NARS partners to consider.
