GenX and Other Chemicals of Emerging Concern

Citation:

Strynar, M. GenX and Other Chemicals of Emerging Concern. North Carolina Onsite Water Protection Conference, Raleigh, NC, October 16 - 17, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

The presentation focuses on the methods development and investigation of emerging per- and polyfluorinated compounds in environmental samples. It focuses on the application of mass spectrometry non-targeted analysis techniques to identify new chemical features, and characterize their structure. The purpose of the presentation is to share the methods developed with scientists tasked to study these substances.

Description:

Presentation on the methods developed for the characterization of per- and polyfluorinated compounds in environmental samples. Per- and polyfluorinated compounds are used in many applications and products such as fluoropolymer dispersions, fluoro-surfactants, paper coatings, and aqueous film forming foam. These compounds are present not only in the products but also in multiple environmental samples. Using high resolution mass spectrometry and tools like negative mass defect screening, homologous series screening and MS/MS for diagnostic per- and polyfluorinated fragments, these compounds can be detected and characterized in environmental samples. The presentation focuses on the analytical approaches used to identify these chemical species.
