Cookstove Research Introduction

Citation:

Jetter, Jim. Cookstove Research Introduction. Presented at Science, Technology, and Innovation for the Inclusion and Promotion of Diversity, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, MEXICO, October 04 - 05, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

Household air pollution from solid-fuel stoves is the most significant environmental problem that affects human health worldwide. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting research and activities to address the problem in coordination with a much larger international effort led by the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. Jim Jetter will serve as an expert advisor and a speaker at the 3rd International and 5th National Conference “University, Health, and Environment (UHE): Science,Technology and Innovation for the Inclusion and Promotion of Diversity” to be held at the University of Science and Arts of Chiapas (UNICACH in Spanish) located in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico. UNICACH is establishing a new household energy research center that will result in the further development of a global network of RTKCs (Regional Testing and Knowledge Centers) that are capable of scientifically evaluating and certifying cookstoves to international standards for air pollutant emissions and fuel efficiency. Mr. Jetter will cover a range of cookstove testing topics including fuel analysis, fuel efficiency, cookstove emissions evaluation, data analysis and QA, and reporting. This presentation will provide an overview of EPA cookstove research and activities to the university audience.

Description:

This presentation includes: (1) a general overview of EPA activities and organization, (2) background on cookstove research and activities, (3) EPA current cookstove efforts, (4) ISO standards development, (5) capacity building for Regional Testing Centers, (6) and EPA cookstove testing.
