Description:
Identifying environmental chemicals that adversely affect children’s health outcomes requires assembling information from a wide variety of sources, particularly from the millions of articles in the biomedical literature. Literature informatics approaches can help researchers make use of this literature in more effective ways. We have developed a novel approach to retrieval from bibliographic sources such as PubMed in a tool called the Abstract Sifter. Implemented in an Excel workbook, the Abstract Sifter allows the researcher to query a resource like PubMed and import the results directly into Excel where novel “sifting” technology allows quick and easy identification of relevant articles. In addition, the Abstract Sifter’s Landscape sheet is specifically designed to get a high-level overview – a landscape view – of the literature for a set of chemicals and to tailor that landscape view for toxicity types (e.g., developmental toxicity) or for connections to a mechanistic description of toxicity through predefined queries tied to adverse outcome pathways. The tool facilitates an agile shifting between a high-level overview and a detailed view of retrieved abstracts. Articles of interest can be tagged, saved, and shared with collaborators.
