Impact/Purpose:

The American Lung Association is sponsoring a webinar titled “Protecting Lung Health During the Wildfire Season” which will focus on states in Region 8, 9 and 10 who are presently be impacted by nearly 100 wildfires. Within the broader webinar Dr. Wayne Cascio will make a presentation titled “Mitigating the Adverse Health Effects of Wildfire Smoke”. The presentation will largely focus on the educational products produced by the EPA and made available to public health, environmental health and healthcare practitioners as well as the public. EPA products that will be discussed include the Air Quality Index, the Wildfire Smoke: A Guide for Public Health Officials, accompanied by related factsheets to disseminate to the public; the particulate matter (PM) web course for health professionals, Particle Pollution and Your Patients’ Health, by EPA and CDC; utilizing the disaster epidemiology framework to engage the public health community during wildfires; and HHS’ Million Hearts program. This general discussion of public health products is expect to increase awareness among the public health, health care and general population concerning the potential risks associated with exposure to air particle pollution as well as providing numerous sources of detailed information that describe guidance to avoid smoke exposure during wildfire smoke events.
