Passive Sampling for Measuring Freely Dissolved Contaminants in Sediments: Basics, Principles & Applications

Citation:

Burgess, R. Passive Sampling for Measuring Freely Dissolved Contaminants in Sediments: Basics, Principles & Applications. Clu-In, na, August 13, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

A webinar was given as part of the Clu-In series organized by the Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI), Technology Innovation and Field Services Division. The overall goal of this webinar was to inform remedial project managers (RPMs) and other regulators and environmental managers about the benefits of using passive sampling at their sites and the types of environmental questions and decisions they can address with this technology. Passive sampling is a new technology for collecting pollutants at contaminated sites. The technology shows great promise for improving the process for determining if polluted sites represent a threat to the environment and public.

Description:

This abstract describes the content of a webinar to given as part of the Clu-In series organized by the Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI), Technology Innovation and Field Services Division. These webinars were free, web-based slide presentations with a companion audio portion. Two options were provided for accessing the audio portion of the seminar: by phone line or streaming audio simulcast. This specific webinar discussed passive sampling technology developed over the last decade and used to measure the bioavailable concentrations (i.e., the freely dissolved concentration) of nonpolar organic contaminants in sediments and in the water column at contaminated areas like Superfund sites. The webinar was divided into the following parts: ● Why use passive sampling methods and what they tell us ● Why do we care about the freely dissolved concentration ● Types of passive sampling methods and how they work ● Preparing, deploying, recovering, and storing passive sampling methods ● Analyzing passive sampling methods data ● Evaluating passive sampling methods applications ● Summary After the presentation, a questions and answers portion of the webinar was held. The overall goal of this webinar was to inform remedial project managers (RPMs) and other regulators and environmental managers about the benefits of using passive sampling at their sites and the types of environmental questions and decisions they can address with this technology.
