Urban soils as a basis for expanded ecosystem services

Citation:

Shuster, W. Urban soils as a basis for expanded ecosystem services. Building Sustainable Urban Communities from the Ground Up, State College, PA, June 07, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

This is an invited presentation for a workshop at Penn. State U. The name of the workshop is: Building Sustainable Urban Communities from the Ground Up. This presentation will inform workshop attendees on how urban soil assessments underpin a fair judging of urban landscape hydrology, and its role in rendering ecosystem services at the community level.

Description:

In the context of urban water cycles, we can use urban landscapes and their underlying soils as a sort of passive green infrastructure to render hydrologic ecosystem services. Cities are dynamic social-ecological systems, where interactions between human needs and natural resources remain in a state of tension.
