Impact/Purpose:
The purpose of this presentation is to show environmental engineers, chemical engineers, and solvent experts how to use the PARIS III solvent substitution software tool to find greener replacements for harmful solvents used by industry. This could have a wide impact on the solvent industry. For example in this presentation, replacement have been found by PARIS III for five solvents presently used by industry that are listed in the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA). The average impact for each of these industrial solvents are reduce by the replacements by more than a factor of five. Implementation of these replacements by industry would greatly reduce harm to the environment.
Description:
The PARIS III presentation is to be given at International Congress on Sustainability Science & Engineering 2018: Industry, Innovation, and Sustainability. PARIS III is a pollution prevention solvent substitution software tool used to find mixtures of solvents that are less harmful to the environment than the original industrial solvents they are to replace. By searching extensively through mixtures of solvents that have physical and chemical properties close to those of the original solvent but have less environmental impact, a list of possible greener replacements may be found. This list may then then be selectively examined to choose only those that function in industrial process the same way, but have much less environmental impact.
