Impact/Purpose:

Submitting an abstract to the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) Health Education Conference. The presentation should last 90 minutes and will focus on the results of a recent NEHA survey on the capacity of local health departments and a demonstration of 5 modules (Epidemiology, Risk Assessment, Risk Communication, Toxicology, and Brownfields/Land Reuse) to be used in local health departments.

Description: In this interactive session, attendees will learn about activities of the Brownfields & Reuse Opportunity Working Network’s (BROWN) Health Education Working Group. BROWN partners range from environmental professionals to public health officials to private sector developers, with several other members in between these categories. We work together to offer free technical assistance to communities with concerns about contaminated sites and community health. The BROWN Health Education Working Group formed to enhance the capacity of local health departments (LHDs) in environmental health and land reuse/brownfields. In this session, we will highlight several activities of the working group, including a short suite of videos, the results of a National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) survey regarding environmental health and land reuse capacities, and a walk-through of environmental health modules created for local health agencies. Objectives: • Gain familiarity with BROWN resources for local health agencies• Learn about the capacities of local health agencies in environmental health and land reuse• Be introduced to and get hands-on practice with environmental health modules specifically geared to local health agency staff• Learn about federal partnerships and efforts to engage local health departments in environmental health and land reuse
