Overview of EPA/WED Research on Water Quality and Coastal Ecosystems in Tillamook Basin and Coastal Recreational Ecosystem Goods and Services (EGS) in Tillamook Bay. To be Presented at Tillamook Estuaries Partnership briefing, Garibaldi, OR, August 02, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

EPA scientists are presenting an overview of water quality and ecosystem services research to the new director of the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP), one of EPA’s National Estuary Program sites. TEP is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of Tillamook County's estuaries and watersheds in their entirety. The Western Ecology Division (WED) of the EPA has been conducting research in collaboration with TEP and Oregon state agencies to provide new data, knowledge and tools that those organizations may apply to accomplish their goals. This briefing summarizes WED’s recent research in Tillamook bay and watersheds on nutrients, fecal bacteria, acidification, river and stream flows, and shellfish habitats, and 2) introduces a new project to assess people's recreational use of estuarine ecosystem services. Most of the presentation concerns work in progress. Knowledge and tools developed and tested in WED’s Tillamook case study are applicable to assessment and management of water quality and ecosystem services in other estuaries and coastal watersheds within the Pacific NW and around the US.

Description:

This is a briefing to the new director of Tillamook Estuaries Partnership to 1) summarize recent research on nutrients, fecal bacteria, acidification, watershed modeling, and shellfish habitats, and 2) introduce a new project to assess people's recreational use of estuarine ecosystem services.
