Green Infrastructure at the Edison Environmental Center - Vegetative
Citation:
OConnor, T. Green Infrastructure at the Edison Environmental Center - Vegetative. Presented at New Jersey Water Environment Association (NJWEA) 103rd Annual Conference, Atlantic City, NJ, May 07 - 11, 2018.
Impact/Purpose:
This presentation will focus on monitoring efforts of vegetative control (bio-infiltration units).
Description:
This presentation will discuss the raingardens and rainwater harvesting efforts. The rain gardens were constructed in three different sizes and the most robust plant growth occurs in the smaller, more frequently inundated rain gardens. Infiltration performance of the rain gardens during Hurricane Irene, the storm of record, will be discussed. Air conditioning for EPA's Region 2 Laboratories is the EEC’s greatest water demand due to required air exchanges in laboratory rooms. A rainwater harvesting system comprised of three 1,500 gallon tanks was developed to supply make-up water for the air conditioner cooling tower. Other rainwater harvesting efforts have also been implemented at the EEC.
