This manuscript introduces the PubMed Abstract Sifter. The Abstract Sifter is a Microsoft Excel based application that enhances the user experience associated with literature searching of PubMed. The Sifter assists researchers to search effectively, triage results, and keep track of articles of interest. The tool implements an innovative “sifter” functionality for relevance ranking, giving the researcher a way to find articles of interest quickly. The tool also gives researchers a view of the literature landscape for a set of entities such as chemicals or genes.

Availability: The Abstract Sifter v3.0 is freely available for download at newftp.epa.gov/… as a Microsoft Excel macro-enabled workbook. Additionally, the US EPA CompTox Chemistry Dashboard includes an implementation of a subset of the sifter technology for web-based access and integration to data for ~757,000 chemical substances.
