When the Data are Conflicting or Confusing – Which Data Should You Believe?

Citation:

Davis, E. When the Data are Conflicting or Confusing – Which Data Should You Believe? 2018 Battelle Chlorinated Conference, Palm Springs, CA, April 08 - 12, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

Abstract presentation at the 2018 Battelle Chlorinated Conference, April 8-12, 2018, Palm Springs, CA.

Description:

The results of environmental samples are critical for interpretation of contamination extent and the risk associated with it. When environmental samples are submitted to a laboratory, whether they are soil, water, or air samples, strict quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) protocols are followed. However, it is not clear that strict QA/QC procedures for the field have been developed to the extent of QA procedures in the laboratory, or that they are strictly followed in all field situations. This presentation will provide examples of conflicting analytical data from environmental samples, and discuss how to best interpret the data. Discussion will include sampling methodology, especially for VOCs in soils.
