Impact/Purpose:

Integrated water resources management (IWRM) involves coordinated management of land, water, and related resources often operating across multiple programs (stormwater management, drinking water, wastewater, land conservation). This workshop provides a training opportunity to introduce users to version 3 of the US EPA Watershed Management Optimization Support Tool (WMOST). WMOST facilitates the application of IWRM by communities and watershed management organizations, allowing users to find the least-cost management solutions to meet multiple objectives for water resources management. Goals could include maintaining a sustainable water supply, meeting pollutant loading targets or water quality criteria, minimizing flooding risk, or eliminating combined sewer overflow discharges, for example.

Description:

This hands-on workshop will provide an introduction to US Environmental Protection Agency’s Watershed Management Optimization Support Tool (WMOST). WMOST is designed to facilitate the application of integrated water resource management (IWRM) by communities, utilities, and watershed organizations, looking across stormwater (both grey and green infrastructure approaches), wastewater, drinking water, and land conservation practices to find the most cost-effective suite of management practices (https://www.epa.gov/exposure-assessment-models/wmost). WMOST allows users to minimize cost while meeting water quantity and quality goals. The workshop will include a brief introduction to IWRM, an overview of WMOST, discussions of the WMOST process, model scenarios, tool validation and troubleshooting, single and multiple-objective optimization and future directions. Workshop participants will be provided with a CD of tool files and background documentation to load onto their laptops. Exercises will be provided for a simple case study that participants can set up and run during the workshop.
