Engineering an organotypic culture model of endocardial cushion morphogenesis to study cardiac developmental toxicity

Citation:

Grode, K. AND S. Hunter. Engineering an organotypic culture model of endocardial cushion morphogenesis to study cardiac developmental toxicity. 10th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences, Seattle, Washington, August 20 - 24, 2017.

Impact/Purpose:

The focus of this poster presentation will be on the challenges associated with developing a human cell-based experimental model system for studying early heart development. The central message will be how difficult it is to induce the biological process of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in 2-dimensional cell culture versus 3-dimensional cell culture. The impact of this presentation will be to raise the awareness of other cell biologists and biomedical engineers in the field who aim to recapitulate this key developmental event in vitro.
