Thinking outside of the lungs: systemic stress response as a pathway and modifier of air pollution health effects

Citation:

Hazari, M., U. Kodavanti, S. Snow, A. Henriquez, A. Farraj, AND Ian Gilmour. Thinking outside of the lungs: systemic stress response as a pathway and modifier of air pollution health effects. Health Effects Institute, Chicago, Illinois, April 29 - May 01, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

Describe the modifying effects of non-chemical stressors like noise on the response to air pollution as well as the role of systemic stress in causing downstream effects in other organ systems. These data provide biological plausibility and support the risk assessment process.

Description:

This poster will describe the effects of non-chemical stressors (e.g. noise) on the physiological response to air pollution, as well as the role of systemic stress pathways in the mediating the adverse health effects. The findings presented here are important because they elucidate the mechanisms of action of air pollution, not just within the respiratory system but systemically.
