Introductory Talk: Adding Up Chemicals: Component-Based Risk Assessment of Chemical Mixturesand Primary Talk: Grouping Chemicals for Assessment and Conducting Assessments with the Hazard Index and Related Methods

Impact/Purpose:

There is limited knowledge on best practices to assess the health risk of exposure to groups or mixtures of chemicals, despite such exposures, either concurrently or sequentially, being the rule rather than the exception These two presentations, given in the same Continuing Education Course at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Toxicology, will Increase knowledge within the scientific community of a) state of the art techniques to group chemicals and b) application of component-based risk assessment procedures for groups and mixtures of chemicals. Attendance is expected to be composed of established thought and science leaders, early career investigators, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students. An increased understanding of mixture risk assessment methods, models and techniques will result in generation of more useful toxicological data and in turn, increased confidence in Agency risk assessments for chemical mixtures.

Description:

Dr. Simmons will provide a concise overview of established and emerging methods to group chemicals for component-based mixture risk assessments. This will be followed by introduction to several important component-based methods, the Hazard Index, Target Organ Hazard Index, Multi-Route Hazard Index and Margin of Exposure.
