Impact/Purpose:

The May 14-15, 2018 EPA STAR Research Meeting, “Integrating Human Health and Well-being with Ecosystem Services”, serves as a kick-off meeting for four new STAR (Science To Achieve Results) projects focusing on examining connections between ecosystem goods and services and human health. To increase the relevance of the STAR research to existing Office of Research and Development (ORD) science on connections between ecosystem services and human health, a series of overview presentations were provided, primarily addressing the question, “How is ORD establishing linkages between ecosystem services and human health and well-being endpoints?”. These presentations showcased science across a range of ORD ecosystem goods and services research, primarily encompassed within the Community-Based Final Ecosystem Goods and Services Project (SHC 2.61).

Description:

This presentation provides an overview of the SHC 2.61 Community-Based Final Ecosystem Goods and Services Project and other ecosystem services activities in the Office of Research and Development. Specifically, this presentation addressed a series of topics: Provide an overview of ecosystem goods and services (EGS) concepts, including intermediate and final EGS. What does consideration of FEGS bring to the decision-making process? How is ORD establishing linkages between ecosystem services and human health and well-being endpoints? and What is the status of ORD tools under development to analyze/quantify FEGS?
