Citation:

Barron, M. SETAC Short Course: Introduction to interspecies toxicity extrapolation using EPA’s Web-ICE tool. SETAC Europe, Rome, N/A, ITALY, May 13 - 17, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

This will be a short course presented at the 2018 SETAC Europe science conference. The course will teach participants the technical basis of ICE models, become proficient in the use of the Web-ICE tool, and apply the tool in example applications and extrapolation of toxicity data. The impact and value to EPA includes: 1) EPA's Web-ICE tool will receive international exposure resulting in increased use; and 2) the stature of the Agency will be enhanced in the international risk assessment community because EPA's research and development and tool development will be highlighted during the course.

Description:

The Web-ICE tool is a user friendly interface that contains modules to predict acute toxicity to over 500 species of aquatic (algae, invertebrates, fish) and terrestrial (birds and mammals) taxa. The tool contains a suite of over 3000 ICE models developed from a database of over 10,000 standardized toxicity records for over 2000 chemicals. The tool also contains modules that generate Species Sensitivity Distributions (SSDs) from Web-ICE estimated toxicity values and surrogate species values. The SSD module allows the user to select 1, 5 or 10th percentile hazard concentrations. Web-ICE contains and endangered species module that predicts toxicity to the taxa of listed species from available surrogate values. The tool has been used in a diversity of U.S. and international ecological risk assessment applications, and has been extensively peer reviewed through multiple journal articles and science review boards. The course will be taught by Dr. Mace Barron, co-developer of the Web-ICE tool. The short course will be taught by EPA's Dr. Mace Barron. Dr. Barron is a senior scientist in EPA’s Office of Research and Development who has published extensively on ICE models, SSDs, and the technical basis of the tool.
