Risk assessments for mixtures: technical methods commonly used in the United States

Citation:

Price, P. Risk assessments for mixtures: technical methods commonly used in the United States. Advancing the Assessment of Chemical Mixtures and their Risks for Human Health and the Environment, Ispra, ITALY, May 29 - 30, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

The purpose of this talk is to present an overview of the technical approaches used by EPA and other US agencies to assess risks posed by combined exposures to one or more chemicals. The focus is on the range of scientific/technical approaches currently or historically used in the US and not what are the policies of specific programs or Offices. This talk was at the request of the Joint Research Center of the European Union and is part of a Workshop that is trying to define the direction of future research on risks posed by mixtures. Attending this workshop will provide an opportunity for EPA to learn about the large and ongoing research program on mixture risks being performed in the European Union.

Description:

A brief (20 minute) talk on the technical approaches used by EPA and other US agencies to assess risks posed by combined exposures to one or more chemicals. The talk systemically reviews the methodologies (whole-mixtures and component-based approaches) that are or have been used by EPA. Efforts are made to make the information understandable to the audience by using both U.S. figures and terminology and where appropriate to also use figures and terms in common use in the European Union.
