Allen, R. Data with a Mission: Building a Community for Interactive Data Visualization at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Qlik Qonnections 2018, Orlando, FL, April 23 - 26, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

The purpose of this presentation was to communicate how EPA uses data visualization to assist our mission functions and our operation and managerial functions. The presenter also describes how EPA built and grew our community of interactive data visualization practitioners through community building and collaboration.

Description:

The U.S Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) stated mission is to protect human health and the environment. A big part of our activities directed at fulfilling our mission directly involve using data. Environmental analysis, activity planning and communication are just a few of the ways that we use data. Over the past few years EPA has increased our use of interactive displays of data using Qlik Sense and many other tools. At EPA we currently have a growing active community of data visualization practitioners. Here I will describe some of the ways that EPA uses Qlik Sense and associated tools to derive value from our data. Getting people to embrace new ways of working with their data and embracing new technologies can be challenging. Through these examples I will focus on some of the methods we used to build our community and become a more data centric agency. These efforts continue to provide additional opportunities for EPA to enhance our efforts to provide positive environmental outcomes.
