Impact/Purpose:
This informational webinar will increase the awareness of those in the Southeastern U.S. responsible for prescribed burns of potential health impacts of smoke from prescribed fire and provide tools and resources to mitigated adverse health impacts. The webinar is intended to increase knowledge of the potential health impacts of wildfire smoke exposure, thus placing a public health lens on decision-making around when and how to do prescribed fires needed to manage fuel loads. The information is intended to serve as part of an integrated and adaptive approach to planning and implementing approaches to protect public health.
Description:
The expanding wildland-urban interface and the proximity of prescribed fires undertaken by the Department of Defense is bringing the source of wildland fires close to densely populated areas in the Southeast. The presentation is an informational webinar to representatives of SERPPAS (Southeast Regional Partnership for Planning and Sustainability). From the SERPPAS website, “SERPPAS’ mission is to achieve mutual and multiple benefits to the partners, sustain the individual and collective mission of partner organizations and secure the future for all the partners, the region, and the nation. This mission will be accomplished through identifying opportunities for mutual gain among all partner groups, effectively addressing differences among the partners, and focusing on identifying solutions to complex problems. State environmental and natural resource officials from across the southeast partnered with the Department of Defense and other federal agencies to form the Southeast Regional Partnership for Planning and Sustainability (SERPPAS). Membership in SERPPAS includes the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. The Partnership came together to promote better collaboration in making resource use decisions. SERPPAS works to prevent encroachment around military lands, encourage compatible resource-use decisions, and improve coordination among regions, states, communities and military services.
