USEPA's Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is a heavily used model to simulate stormwater and wastewater infrastructure performance as an enhanced decision making tool. SWMM I was released in 1971 by the Metcalf and Eddy, Water Resources Engineers, and the University of Florida. Many contributors worked on SWMM II, 3, and 4 in the 1988’s and many commercial entities further developed SWMM and SWMM interfaces and analytical tools during the next two decades. USEPA and CDM-Smith rewrote and released a C version of SWMM 5 in 2005 and added low impact development modules in 2010. While SWMM has always been a collaboratively developed software, its further development can become even more broadly performed by the stakeholder group via community based open source software development. USEPA can continue its affiliation with SWMM as software practices evolve into the 21st century.
