Virus and indicator relationships in groundwater
Citation:
Fout, Shay. Virus and indicator relationships in groundwater. The Role of Water Quality in Food Safety: Does Water Matter, Webinar, Webinar, April 30, 2018.
Impact/Purpose:
Indicators are used in EPA rules to minimize risk from microbial pathogens. This presentation examines the effectiveness of indicators for predicting virus presence in untreated groundwater.
Description:
This presentation examines indicator-virus relationships from 13 international studies of public groundwater systems. This presentation shows that the absence of classic indicators is a strong predictor of the absence of viral pathogens. However, indicators are often present in the absence of viruses and viruses may be present in the absence of indicators. Overall, coliphages are good predictors of human viruses.
