Open Source EPANET: Community-Based Software Development for Drinking Water Infrastructure Modeling

Citation:

Murray, R., M. Tryby, AND R. Janke. Open Source EPANET: Community-Based Software Development for Drinking Water Infrastructure Modeling. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/S-18/004, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

EPANET was created by the US EPA in the 1990s out of a need to better understand water quality transport processes in water distribution systems. Work ceased in 2000 and it last received a minor update in 2008. In the intervening time, EPANET has become the industry standard for hydraulic and water quality simulation of water distribution systems. In 2016 the US Federal Government announced the Federal Source Code Policy encouraging Federal Agencies to make their software Open Source. The purpose of this Research Brief is to announce the initiation of a new research project to apply Open Source Software (OSS) Development to US EPAs EPANET software, supporting cost efficiency, mission effectiveness, and improvement of the publics experience with Government research programs. Through this project, the US EPA will investigate and leverage the benefits of OSS development for future version of EPANET software.
