Impact/Purpose:

On April 3, 2018, NHEERL Acting Lab Director, Dr. Wayne Cascio, will present an “Overview of Atherosclerosis and Chemical Stressors,” at a Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, “Understanding the Combined Effects of Environmental Chemical and Non-Chemical Stressors: Atherosclerosis as a Model” sponsored by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Atherosclerosis is a condition in which plaque buildup causes arteries to narrow and harden. Dr. Cascio’s presentation will highlight atherosclerosis’s rapidly growing role as a cause of increasing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the U.S., and the contribution of environmental pollutants to its development. The workshop will address the interaction of chemicals present in the environment and non-chemical stressors as determinants of atherosclerotic risk, and will explore the key biological mechanisms and pathways of their combined effects. NHLBI’s acknowledgement of environmental toxicants as a hazard for cardiovascular disease offers the opportunity to increase cooperation to develop cross-Agency efforts to fight the epidemic of heart and blood vessel disease in the U.S.
