Impact/Purpose:

From a resilience perspective, EPA’s research could impact every city — even cities that haven't even been built yet. The 100 Resilient Summit will bring together leaders from across the resilience community to create solutions, share knowledge, and continue planning for a more resilient future. This “postcard” and the related Flyer will be shared with urban resilience leaders from around the world — to spur ideas, innovation, and creativity. Help spark and inspire the next idea to make our cities more resilient.

Description:

The Proctor Creek neighborhood in Atlanta is a poor, mostly African American community plagued by flooding, derelict housing, mold, and pathogens in the creek. Tires found in the creek bear the mark of municipal service vehicles. The area is prey to extreme heat and environmental degradation, poor community health, and few business opportunities. This project is an example of where community action, science, and government planning and implementation come together to overcome environmental injustice. It highlights the complex and issues and comprehensive partnerships needed to address environmental justice. It highlights that resilience stressors like the flooding faced by the Proctor Creek community are not new – these problems are the product of land use decisions, the built environment and impermeable surfaces, and Stormwater runoff leading to environmental degradation, water quality violations, and environmental public health impacts.
