Impact/Purpose:

Water Sustainability

Description:

This book chapter discusses various nanotechnologies for water sustainability. Detailed information on catalysis as an advanced oxidation process, nanofiltration, adsorption, water disinfection, and groundwater remediation is provided for water treatment. These nanomaterials effectively remove target water contaminants, including alcohols, hydrocarbons, dyes, endocrine disruptors, cyanotoxins, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides by oxidation, adsorption, or filtration. Moreover, several techniques are very promising for water disinfection. They could effectively inactivate pathogenic microorganisms by damaging their DNA and RNA or disrupting their cell membrane. Finally, the formation and role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in photocatalysis-based advanced oxidation processes are introduced and different techniques to determine the formation of ROS are also discussed.
