Reactive Nitrogen Monitoring Gaps: Issues, Activities and Needs
Impact/Purpose:
Budgets of total atmospheric nitrogen deposition are needed to support the secondary NAAQS and critical loads research to protect ecosystem health. Current national monitoring networks do not characterize the full suite of nitrogen compounds needed to develop accurate budgets. Additional monitoring of ammonia and organic nitrogen on a national scale is needed.
Description:
In this article we demonstrate the importance of ammonia and organic nitrogen to total N deposition budgets and review the current activities to close these monitoring gaps. Finally, remaining monitoring needs and issues are discussed.
