Campisano, R., K. Hall, J. Griggs, S. Willison, S. Reimer, H. Mash, M. Magnuson, L. Boczek, AND E. Rhodes. Selected Analytical Methods for Environmental Remediation and Recovery (SAM) 2017. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/R-17/356, 2017.

Impact/Purpose:

There is a need for increased laboratory capacity for analysis of environmental samples in response to a chemical, biological or radiological (CBR) contamination incident. To address the laboratory capacity need, the SAM document was developed. SAM identifies analytical methods to be used in cases when multiple laboratories are called on to analyze environmental samples following a homeland security-related intentional or accidental contamination incident. SAM Identifies a single, selected method for each analyte in a specific sample matrix and contains over 1,000 analyte/sample type pairings. Using a single method permits sharing of sample load between laboratories; Increases the speed of analysis; improves data comparability; and simplifies potential outsourcing for analytical support. The document is intended to support the Environmental Response Laboratory Network and Water Laboratory Alliance, and also can be used as a tool to assist state and local laboratories in planning for and analyzing environmental following (CBR) incidents. SAM informs decision makers of the best analytical method available to evaluate the nature and extent of contamination and assess decontamination efficacy.
