Accountability: Evaluating the impact of emission control policies on air pollutant levels and health outcomes

Citation:

Rao, S. AND V. Garcia. Accountability: Evaluating the impact of emission control policies on air pollutant levels and health outcomes. 2017 NordicWelfAir Workshop, Reykjavik, ICELAND, September 25 - 29, 2017.

Impact/Purpose:

Share information on accountability with other scientists and present results of multi-year accountability project conducted for NOx State Implementation Plan (SIP) Call, an actual regulation implemented under the National Ambient Air Quality Standards program.

Description:

Presentation on examining the impacts of an actual regulatory action (NOx SIP Call) on human health. We examined respiratory-related hospital admissions before and after the implementation of the NOx SIP Call. In addition, we found that enriched exposure information (incorporating exposure modeling, using fused datasets) improved our ability to detect a health signal. Finally, we showed that air masses transported from the Ohio River Valley into NYS were associated with an increased risk of being hospitalized for respiratory-related illness.
