Fischer, J., H. Mash, C. Bennett-Stamper, AND D. Dionysiou. Analysis of Life Cycle within Various Strains of Cyanobacteria with a Focus on Internal Regulators & Toxin Production. 2017 OHIO SECTION ANNUAL CONFERENCE, Toledo,OH, September 26 - 29, 2017.

Impact/Purpose:

HABs exact a cost of approximately $2.2B annually in the US, including costs associated with restricted use of recreational waters, declining waterfront real estate value, spending on recovery of biodiversity, and drinking water treatment. Wide variety of taxa can produce blooms. Typically detrimental to the aquatic system and can be harmful to humans and land animals (contact and consumption). Blooms are dependent on numerous factors, including nutrient loading, temperature, water flow and weather patterns

Description:

Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic bacteria that exhibit some similarities to algae and can be found naturally in lakes, streams, ponds, and other surface waters. However, toxin producing cyanobacteria have become an increasing concern as growth rates have been escalating. Nevertheless, the main triggering factors controlling these increased growth rates are not fully understood. As such, it is of paramount concern to learn more about these bacteria to allow for accurate prediction of toxin synthesis and potential neutralization solutions to avoid mass toxin release into waterways.
