Measurements and Modeling to Enhance Estimates of NH3 Total Deposition
Citation:
Schwede, D., G. Lear, Johnt Walker, AND M. Puchalski. Measurements and Modeling to Enhance Estimates of NH3 Total Deposition. Western Modeling Workshop, Boulder, Colorado, September 06 - 08, 2017.
Impact/Purpose:
Values for nitrogen deposition are needed as input to critical loads and other ecosystem analyses. Currently, values of total atmospheric deposition are produced using a measurement-model fusion approach. Ammonia is an important component of the nitrogen budget, however the spatial variability of ammonia concentrations and the bidirectional nature of the air-surface exchange of ammonia make it difficult to include in the measurement-model fusion approach. Research is being performed by ORD to better understand ammonia air-surface exchange.
Description:
Values for the total (wet + dry) deposition of ammonia are needed as input to nitrogen budget studies and ecological assessments. Concentrations of ammonia are measured at NADP’s Ammonia Monitoring Network (AMoN) sites. Research is focusing on the use of the concentration values from AMoN in the NADP maps of total deposition and also in the development of deposition values for AMoN sites. The presentation presents research efforts underway to develop a bidirectional flux model for use at AMoN sites and measurement studies being done to support model development and use of the AMoN data in NADP’s total deposition maps.
