Impact/Purpose:
This is a periodic public communication under the Louisville NGEM project (R4 RARE and AE EM Task 1.2). Background: From the shared perspective of industrial facilities, regulators, and nearby communities, effective detection of fugitive emissions of volatile organic and odiferous compounds is a mutually beneficial concept. If unanticipated emissions that require mitigation can be found and fixed in a timely manner, benefits such as lower air shed impacts, safer working environments, cost saving through reduced project loss, and improved community relations can be realized. Under its next generation emission measurement (NGEM) program, EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) is working to develop new sensor and modeling approaches that can assist facilities in detection and mitigation of certain air pollution sources. To help advance NGEM research, EPA ORD, EPA Region 4, and the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (LMAPCD) are working together on research effort to demonstrate NGEM approaches at and near facilities in the Rubbertown industrial district of Louisville KY.
