The impact of Nanocomposites across their Lifecycle

Citation:

Sahle-Demessie, E. The impact of Nanocomposites across their Lifecycle. Association of Official Analytical Chemists, Columbus, OH, August 01 - 02, 2017.

Impact/Purpose:

Methodology and modeling techniques are discussed on the release of nanoparticles from nanocomposite during environmental weathering. Simulated accelerated weathering was used to assess the changes in the properties of the composite materials and the released nanoparticles that include CNT and nano-clay particles from consumer products.

Description:

There are limited systematic comprehensive studies on the aging of different composites, release of nanoparticles, and identifying their different forms. The polymer type, the aging conditions including UV dose and moisture affect the amount of the release of nanofillers (nanoparticles or nanofibers) from the matrix. Detailed evidence is provided for the nature of the degradation products: no free nanofillers are detected up to the detection threshold of 100 ppm. The potential impact of released nanoparticles on the drinking water system has been discussed.
