Impact/Purpose:

Presentation using EJ SCREEN and C-FERST

Description:

Communities across the United States are faced with concerns about environmental risks and exposures including air contaminants near roadways, proximity to hazardous waste sites and children’s environmental health. These concerns are compounded by complicated data, limited opportunities for collaboration and resource-based restrictions such as funding. This workshop will introduce innovative approaches for combining the capacity of EPA science tools - EJ SCREEN and the recently released Community Focused Exposure and Risk Screening Tool (C-FERST). Following a nationally applicable case study, participants will learn how these tools can be used sequentially to; (1) identify community environmental health ‘hotspots’; (2) take a closer look at local scale sources of exposure and; (3) use new features of the tool to target potential partners and resources across the country. By exploring the power of GIS mapping and crowdsource data, participants will leave with simple, user-defined approaches for using state of the science tools to advance their community and environmental health projects.
