Impact/Purpose:

Phenol is an essential organic compound used for the synthesis of pharmaceutical products, polymer resins, and fungicides and has widespread application as a preservative. Most of the phenol produced requires high pressure and temperatures in the presence of catalysts. This study developed an economical, benign, and sustainable method for the conversion of benzene to phenol using visible light. These results can be applied by a chemist looking for a more sustainable option for the synthesis of phenol.

Description:

A photoactive bimetallic CuAg@g-C3N4 catalyst system has been designed and synthesized by impregnating copper and silver nanoparticles over the graphitic carbon nitride surface. Its application has been demonstrated in the hydroxylation of benzene under visible light.
