Impact/Purpose:
Cybersecurity has emerged as an issue of growing concern to the nation’s water and wastewater utilities. Cyber-attacks on water utilities can have far reaching impacts on public health; not only in the delivery of clean, potable water to consumers but to other critical services that depend on the continuous delivery of water. This study discusses the EPA’s National Homeland Security Research Center (NHSRC) Subject Matter Expert Workshop held to Identify Cybersecurity Research Gaps and Needs of the Nation’s Water and Wastewater Systems Sector. The workshop was designed to create a forum for subject matter experts (SMEs) to exchange ideas and address important cybersecurity challenges facing the water sector. As a result of the workshop, NHSRC gathered important information about process control system operation and the corresponding cybersecurity needs of water and wastewater utilities. Workshop discussion revealed that the utilities have many needs ranging from cybersecurity staff training to the development and deployment of currently available and new software and hardware tools and device.
