Impact/Purpose:
This article investigates a method to reduce CO2 emissions by capturing and converting CO2 into useful chemical feedstocks. Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is an essential industrial compound which is used in methylation chemistry as a biodegradable organic solvent, is an important building blocks in pharmaceutical industries, and is recognized as a high octane fuel. Given the growing functions of DMC in industrial products, it became imperative to design a sustainable and straightforward protocol for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate, preferably using abundant greenhouse gas, CO2. These results could be applied by industry looking to reduce CO2 emissions in a useful and sustainable manner, or synthesize DMC efficiently.
Description:
A titanium-based zeolitic thiophene-benzimidazolate framework has been designed for the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The developed catalyst activates carbon dioxide and delivers over 16% yield of DMC without the use of any dehydrating agent or requirement for azeotropic distillation.
