Description:
Altgeld Gardens-Murray Homes is a public housing development situated within a toxic doughnut (surrounded by landfills, hazardous waste sites, and heavy manufacturing facilities) in the Riverdale Community of Chicago IL, USA. Concerned about high rates of environmentally-related health conditions, a community resident established People for Community Recovery (PCR), a community-based environmental justice organization focused on promoting health equity for low-income and minority communities. For 37 years, PCR has been dedicated to educating residents about local environmental hazards and enhancing the quality of life for residents living in communities affected by pollution. Recent community-based assessments have been useful in community organizing efforts and in collaborations with other stakeholders to build a more sustainable and healthy community.
