Impact/Purpose:

To communicate EPA EnviroAtlas research and data availability to an international audience of urban ecology scientists and related professionals

Description:

The web-based EnviroAtlas is an easy-to-use mapping and analysis tool built by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its partners to provide information, data, and research on the relationships between ecosystems, built infrastructure, and societal well-being. The tool is designed for citizens, students, and professionals to assess the status of local and national “green” assets, their relevance to human health and well-being, current threats, and future opportunities. In addition to extensive national datasets, a high-resolution component for selected urban communities features one-meter resolution landcover data and 100+ “green infrastructure” and related maps summarized by census block-group. Data can be examined within seven benefit categories: clean air; clean and plentiful water; natural hazard mitigation; climate stabilization; recreation, culture and aesthetics; food, fuels, and materials; and biodiversity conservation. Demographic data and built environment metrics are also provided at this scale for overlays and analyses.EnviroAtlas is designed to inform decision alternatives in management sectors including transportation, public health, water supply, recreation, and environmental conservation, as well as provide data, information, and analysis tools to scientists, students, and concerned citizens. Community data are currently available in 13 urban areas, with 50 U.S. communities targeted by 2019. All EnviroAtlas maps are available for download through web services at www.epa.gov/enviroatlas.This research has been reviewed and approved by EPA; it does not necessarily reflect Agency policy.
