Nutrient Recovery

Description:

Currently, people are exposed to many chemicals in the environment by a variety of chemicals used and produced for anthropogenic activities. Many studies reportadverse effects of chemicals in the environment on the health of humans and animals; such as endocrine disruption, feminization, and death. Moreover, excess nutrients in the aquatic environment can lead to the formation of massive algal blooms. Harmful cyanobacterial algae can produce toxins, known as cyanotoxins that can potentially be a threat to public health. Therefore, the development of technology to remove nutrients and contaminants in the environment is in high demand for the public health.Iron is an abundant element in the earth and is widely used for the environmental application to remove nutrients and contaminants from water. With certain treatments, iron oxides can be magnetized through phase transformation. Additionally, cerium (Ce) and lanthanum (La) have been widely used in catalysis due to their high activity, to develop magnetically separable iron-based, Ce- and La-modified materials for environmental applications. In this project, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-assisted combustion method was employed to synthesize Ce- and La-modified, magnetic, iron-based materials as catalysts and adsorbents. Their physicochemical properties were analyzed using various characterization techniques, while catalytic activity was evaluated for the decomposition of the dye methylene blue. Lastly, their adsorption capacity for phosphate removal was evaluated. In this presentation, the results on the characterization and evaluation of the catalytic and adsorption ability of the synthesized nanomaterials will be presented and discussed.
