Impact/Purpose:

Demonstrates a method to assess the regional and sectoral roles of renewable electricity, energy efficiency and fuel switching in meeting NOx emission reduction targets. This method may be of use to states in developing cost-effective strategies for reducing tropospheric ozone. Furthermore, the resulting curves can be used within integrated assessment models to characterize the cost-vs.-abatement relationship.

Description:

A marginal abatement cost curve (MACC) traces out the relationship between the quantity of pollution abated and the marginal cost of abating each additional unit. In the context of air quality management, MACCs typically are developed by sorting end-of-pipe controls by their respective cost effectiveness. Alternative measures, such as renewable electricity, energy efficiency, and fuel switching (RE/EE/FS), are not considered as it is difficult to quantify their abatement potential. In this presentation, we demonstrate the use of an energy system model to develop regional and sectoral MACCs for nitrogen oxides (NOx) that incorporate both end-of-pipe controls and these alternative measures. The resulting MACCs may be incorporated into other modeling tools, such as Integrated Assessment Models, and may be of use in developing regional emission control strategies.
